Letter from a Millennial

MAY 2012 Millennial Marketing Insight from HypeLife Brands: "Letter from a Millennial"
I am Generation Y, and I'd like you to know a few things about me.

Like how I don't believe in your wars, and how I don't read that old newspaper collecting dust at the corner of your coffee table… But don’t get me wrong, I read a lot. It’s just, you know, all online. Are you online? Cause if you’re not, you don't exist to me.

And as far as brands go, your advertisements don't faze me… It all just seems so noisy. What I need is for you to understand me, and I want you to get to know me rather than pushing your agenda… Really. If I want to know if something's cool, I'll just ask one of my friends before I go buy it. And another thing: Try being more interesting and less like my parents if you want to get in touch. Amuse me, even. Or do something that betters the world somehow… Then you might get my attention. Show me that you get me.

I love my phone (my Android, my iPhone, or something with a little less swag if I have to). I make it work for me (Did I just say "swag"? I think BeiberFever just killed that word for me). Text me. Don’t call me. Especially if you’re gonna wanna talk for hours, and especially if your "customer service" people are gonna put me on hold. It’s cheaper, it’s faster, and I can do it during class. What's not to like? (And yeah, I use words like ‘gonna’ and ‘wanna’.)

Not to mention, why I would ever go buy a CD anymore is beyond me – not with all the new, cool, cheap stuff that I can get off the web... Though I do I love records and special ways I can connect with the artists and bands I dig. I even got to go backstage at the last show with the ticket package I bought! Rad! My information and news about bands and everything else is delivered to me from my friends, from Facebook, and from Twitter. Note: MY information. I don't know why my parents even watch the evening news… There’s no news there, only stories about bad things happening to people. I don't need that.

The brands I buy are the brands I love: Nike, Apple, Adidas, Sony Playstation, Target, Nintendo, etc. BUT, I'm not afraid to try new things. I'm always on the lookout for something new to entertain me, something new to wear. While many of us are broke right now because a good job is hard to come by, the money we have, we spend. Whatcha got?

And if only I could buy more stuff on Facebook; I'm already on there all day anyways. I know what you're thinking: I'm lazy. But I'm not. I'm just not motivated to get into the same rat race you chose to get in on - I'd rather make a difference in something I care about.

This is me…I am Generation Y, I am Generation C, and that's "C" for connected by the way. I am connected in every way I want to be, and I disconnect from everything I don't want to be.

Love,
Generation Y
